My parental reflection: What true friendship has taught me

Writing this series made me pause and really look at my child, not through the lens of diagnoses or developmental checklists, but through the relationships that shape his world. As parents of neurodiverse children, we often worry about the future.  Will they be accepted?  Will they be understood?  Will they find their place? What this journey has taught me is that true friendship answers many of those fears. Not loud friendships. Not forced friendships. But the quiet kind, where a child is allowed to be exactly who they are. Watching my child experience friendship that is safe, patient, and accepting has been one of the most reassuring parts of this journey. One of the most important lessons we can teach children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not how to make friends but how to recognize what a healthy friendship feels like. For many ASD children, social rules can be confusing, unspoken, or inconsistent. That’s why understanding the emotional experience of friendship matters more than memorizing behaviors. Healthy Friendship Feels Safe A healthy friendship doesn’t cause constant anxiety or pressure. It feels calm, predictable, and respectful. Parents, teachers, and caregivers play a critical role in shaping how friendships form and how differences are perceived. Parents: Protectors and Guides:  Parents are often the first to recognize when a friendship is supportive or when it isn’t. Not every child who plays alongside your child is a true friend, and that’s okay. Our role is to encourage friendships based on shared comfort, not popularity. Teach boundaries and consent. When a child is on the autism spectrum, conversations often focus heavily on social skills, eye contact, turn-taking, conversation rules, and group interaction. While these skills can be helpful, they are not the foundation of friendship. Connection is. For children with ASD, true friendship provides something far more important than social performance: emotional safety. A real friend doesn’t require constant talking, forced interaction, or masking who they are. A real friend allows pauses, silence, and differences without judgment.  This is especially important for ASD children, who often spend a large part of their day navigating environments that demand they adapt to others. 😂😂 Listen… I can’t tell the difference between two white plastic spoons. But my neurodiverse child? He absolutely can. This spoon is wrong. That spoon is acceptable. And choosing the wrong one will apparently ruin the entire meal and possibly the day. Neurodiverse kids don’t eat with any spoon. They eat with THE spoon. Mom life unlocked 🥄😅

Neurodiverse Part 4: Acceptance, Advocacy & becoming the parent my child needed

Acceptance didn’t happen all at once: It wasn’t a single moment or decision, it was a series of small choices we made every day to see our child for who he is, not who we expected him to be. Acceptance meant letting go of the idea that something was “wrong” and embracing the truth that our child’s brain simply works differently. Different doesn’t mean broken. Different doesn’t mean less. Learning to Advocate: As acceptance grew, advocacy followed. We learned that our child needed someone to speak up for him, in classrooms, in therapy rooms, and sometimes even within family spaces. Advocacy wasn’t about being confrontational; it was about being informed and confident. Once we started understanding our child’s sensory needs, everything at home began to change, not overnight, and not perfectly, but intentionally. The biggest shift wasn’t in our child. It was in us (as parents, grandparents and immediate family) We learned that structure wasn’t about control, it was about safety. Predictability helped our child feel secure in a world that often felt overwhelming. Routines became anchors. Visual cues replaced constant verbal instructions. We learned that transitions needed preparation, not pressure. What Worked (and What Didn’t): We quickly realized that pushing through discomfort didn’t build resilience, it built distress. So we stopped forcing activities just because they were “age-appropriate” or looked good on paper. Messy play wasn’t soothing. Sudden changes caused anxiety. Too much stimulation led to meltdowns. Walking into occupational therapy for the first time was intimidating. We didn’t know what to expect and if I’m being honest, I was scared of what we might hear. As a parent, you want reassurance that everything is fine. At the same time, you desperately want answers. OT became the place where things finally started to make sense. During the assessments, the therapist didn’t look at my child as “difficult” or “overreacting.” Instead, she observed how he responded to textures, sounds, movement, and transitions. Things I had brushed off or questioned myself about suddenly had names, patterns, and explanations. We discovered our child was neurodiverse during COVID-19 lockdown, a season that forced families to slow down and spend every hour together. With no school, no visitors, and nowhere to go, our home became the center of everything and that’s when we started noticing things we might otherwise have missed. At the time, my son was three years old, and as a first-time mom, I tried my best to keep him engaged without relying on constant screen time. I planned simple activities like arts and crafts, thinking it would be fun and creative. Instead, it became our first wake-up call. I set up a small art station in the garage, paper, paint, the whole works. But when a tiny drop of paint touched his hand, he reacted in a way I didn’t understand at the time, he freaked out. Postpartum is messy. 🌪️ It’s sacred ✨ It’s exhausting 😩 And it deserves honesty. No one tells you that the miracle of bringing life into the world comes with nights that never seem to end, tears you can’t always explain, and a body and mind that feel foreign to you. Postpartum isn’t just about healing physically. It’s the emotional turmoil, the identity shift, the constant juggling of everyone else’s needs while trying to remember who you are. It’s loving so deeply your heart feels like it might burst, and also feeling like you can barely survive the day. 💛 You don’t need to apologize for struggling. 🙏 You don’t need to pretend this is easy. ❌ Some days will be beautiful and awe-filled.
